Profile : Gerald (Gerry) Shuttleworth

BACKGROUND

Gerry was born in 1931 at Oribi Flats, outside Port Shepstone, into a dairy farming family. Oribi Flats in those days was still "darkest Africa" and his mother had to rest in hospital for a week before taking him home to the farm on horseback. The first two years of his education was given by his mother and at the age of seven he was sent to boarding school at Port Shepstone Junior School. High school was Technical High in Durban.

Sport was always a major part of Gerry's life and at school he played 1st team cricket and 2nd team rugby but soon found out that rugby was not his forte.

CAREER

On leaving school he joined Otis Elevators and served his apprenticeship with this company. However being a "people person" Gerry wanted interaction on a personal basis and left Otis to pursue a sales career.

In 1963 Gerry joined Rocla as a Sales Rep, became Sales Manager in 1970 and Natal Regional Manager in 1980 which position he held until his retirement in 1997.

FAMILY

Gerry has two daughters, one son and seven grand children ranging in ages from 12 to 28 years old. All of the family are involved in sport in one way or another and are all cricket, rugby and golf fanatics.

SPORTS OTHER THAN GOLF

Badminton 1st Division1949 to 1953
Snooker 1st Division1956 to 1963
Cricket 1st Division1955 to 1963
Marist Old Boys Club Captain1958 to 1960

GOLF

Having decided that he was reaching the end of his cricketing career this needed to be filled with another sport and after joining Kloof Country Club in 1964 took up golf.

Never happy to just be a player he was elected to the Golf Committee of Kloof in 1970 and held the office of Vice Captain from 1975 to 1976 and Captain in 1977.

GOLF ADMINISTRATION - 1978 to 1995

In 1978 Gerry was elected to the Committee of Natal Golf Union and served as President of the NGU from 1987 to 1990.

During his Presidency of NGU he was elected (1986) to the Committee of South African Golf Union becoming the President of this Union in 1992 and 1993.

This position included the managing of various South African golf teams and Gerry managed Natal in Inter-Provincials and South African invitation teams locally and overseas.

In 1980 he managed the Natal Team which won the Inter-Provincial Golf Championships at Mowbray, Cape Town. This Natal team still holds the record for being the only Natal Team to have won the Inter Provincial away from home. Fellow Golf Captain Society member David Suddards was Captain of that team.

In 1992 he attended the World Conference of National Golf Presidents at St Andrews and was privileged to play at the Old Course, St Andrews.

Gerry is also a Founder Member of Qaccs Golf Club.

For his service to golf Gerry is very proud to have been honoured with Honorary Nomad Membership and Honorary Life Membership of Kloof Country Club and Qaccs.

Gerry finally retired from golf administration in 1995.

GOLF CAPTAINS SOCIETY of KZN

Gerry joined the GCS in 1977 whilst he was Captain of Kloof CC and became Captain in 1999. A position he held for 10 years. He was instrumental in arranging the Bill Kerr Memorial to be played annually by KZN junior golfers. A tournament the society still sponsors today.

Gerry will be delighted to know that the society is functioning well and that 100 players will be playing in the second Gerry Shuttleworth Memorial Golf Day on 27 June, at his home club, Kloof CC.

NOMADS

In 1976 he was inducted as a Member of Nomads having been proposed by his friend Doug Milne. Gerry & Doug were partners in the Gary Player Competition for 23 consecutive years reaching the final three times and losing all three by a single stroke.

They did however win the plate one year.

GOLF AS A PLAYER

Gerry played League golf for Kloof Country Club for many years and had 3 or 4 games in A League (1st Division). Lowest handicap was 4.

His home club was Kloof Country Club, where he was the Club President, and he was also a member of Durban Country Club.

Whilst he still played golf 5 to 6 times a month Gerry also took up playing bowls which he played twice a week. Again, never happy to be just a "member" Gerry was elected President of Hillcrest Bowling Club.

Gerry passed away on Christmas Day 2008.
